Step-by-step Setup

1. Connect the device

Connect your Trezor to your computer with the USB cable. Wait for the device screen to show the welcome message. If using mobile, follow the device-specific instructions on the official site.

2. Open Trezor Suite

Open suite.trezor.io in your browser or the downloaded app and follow on-screen prompts. If Suite asks to update firmware, follow verification steps — do not skip.

3. Initialize as new

Choose Create a new wallet (or similar) and follow the Suite to generate a recovery seed. The device will show each word; write them down in order on the provided cards. Do not store the seed digitally.

Tip

Use the supplied recovery cards or high-quality steel backup devices if you’re comfortable with them. Store backups in separate secure locations.

Choosing a PIN

The PIN is requested by the device whenever it's plugged in. Choose a 6–9 digit PIN that's not easily guessable. Never write the PIN on the seed card.

You may optionally perform a device recovery test on a spare device to ensure your written seed restores accounts. This confirms your backup is correct.

Firmware verification confirms the device runs authentic, untampered code. Trezor Suite performs an automated verification step when you first connect a new device or update firmware; always accept and verify prompts on the device screen.

How Suite helps

Trezor Suite guides you to install updates, manage multiple accounts, and verify addresses. Use Suite for sending transactions and verifying addresses — never rely solely on the computer screen for address verification.

2. Verify firmware prompt → Confirm on device
3. Create wallet / import accounts
4. Send transaction → Verify address on device screen

Transacting Safely

Receiving funds

Always verify the receiving address on the Trezor device display before sharing it. Addresses change per account and per derivation path — verification ensures malware hasn't changed the address on your computer.

Sending funds

When you send crypto, confirm amount, fees, and recipient address directly on the device screen. If values do not match, cancel and troubleshoot.

Fees and transaction speed

Use Suite's suggested fee for typical confirmations, or set custom fees if you understand mempool behavior. For large transactions, consider splitting or using coin control features in advanced settings.

Troubleshooting

Device not detected

  1. Try a different USB cable and port.
  2. Restart Suite and the computer.

Forgot PIN or lost seed

If you forget the PIN and still have the recovery seed, you can recover your wallet on another device. If both PIN and seed are lost, wallet funds are unrecoverable. Protect your seed.

Advanced Features

Passphrase (hidden wallets)

Passphrases add an extra word to your seed for plausible deniability and multiple hidden wallets. They are powerful but dangerous: losing the passphrase means losing access. Understand implications before enabling.

Shamir backup

Some Trezor models support Shamir Backup (SLIP-0039) which splits your seed into multiple shares. This reduces single-point-of-failure risk.

Can I restore my wallet on any Trezor?
